In reply to Peter Heehn. I made my bed frame out of all cedar. If you are looking to keep costs down or just can't find the finished lumber near you, I think that pine would tie in well with the cedar once they are finished. Cheers!

Hi Tyler, I think that adding shelves would be very doable and add some more functionality to the bed frame! Were you thinking vertical shelves on either side of the head of the bed? I would say for adding shelves to this bed, make sure to tie the shelf frame into the bed frame so it is very well held up. I would also use a 2×4 or even 4×4 for the leg on the other end of the shelves to best match the bed frame, I would say it depends on how long the shelves are. Hi Pete, I love the design but am really wanting to make a bed with shelves on each side for storage. Any advice on how might be able to adjust this design to account for that?
