Hi Tony! The call them western red cedar at my store as well. But definitely vary in color depending on the batch. Over time they’ll lose some of the color and become less red ( in my experience ) Best of luck!

I went to Lowe’s and Home Depot and their selection is a little on the redder side while yours appears to be more white. Is there a specific name to them? Here they are called “Western Red Cedar Dog Ear Fence Picket.” Again, they’re a little more on the red side. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Oh I see, sorry for the misunderstanding Hollon. I would say if the shelf isn’t going to have a lot of weight in addition to the oak board to got for it! Good Luck! Cheers!

The shelf is 1” x 12” x 9’.
I would use the 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” frame for the entire length and width. The shelf wouldn’t have more than a few pounds on it, but the oak itself is heavy.

Hi Ruben,
Each shelf box frame uses 3 Cedar Pickets to account for the top, sides, and bottom of the box. So if you were going to make 2 shelves it would use 6 pickets.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

If you are talking a 1ft by 12ft red oak shelf I would say that if you extended the frame to be the whole width of the shelf and used heavy duty screws, or lag bolts, that it would hold. But it depends on what your intended use for the shelf is. Cheers!

Hi Michael,
Treated wood is definitely a good idea for the bathroom. It does depend a little bit on how dry your area is but overtime the wood will start to rot from all the moisture.

Have fun with the project! Cheers!

The only problem with that is screwing into the end grain isn’t very strong. If your not putting a lot of weight on it that may be fine, but it probobly wont be as durable if there is going to be some weight on it.

Great project! Going to build some for my bathroom. Would you recommend treated wood or is the steam from the shower not that big of a deal?
Thanks!
Mike
