Attached is the finished case. I went with a 32″ shelf to best fit the space and the Provincial stain. It was a surprise for my wife and she was super happy with it. I’ll keep an eye on the shelves to see if they start to sag.

James, I would say that it all depends on what you plan to put on the shelves. If it is something heavy or a lot of large books or objects I would recommend a support. If there will not be a huge load on the shelves they should be sturdy enough to be structural and not bow even at 30″. As for what size support, I think that a 1×10 would be sufficient unless what you put on the shelf is extremely heavy. Good luck with your build!

Do I need to install vertical supports on each shelf if I want to widen the bookcase to 30″? If so, do I use 2x10s as well or 1×10?
