Jared, we use melamine because it is sealed and smooth, you should be able to find a quick sheet for around $12, instead of having to buy a full sheet. If you were to use plywood, the concrete wouldn’t come out completely smooth and it would soak into the board. If you’re able to find a sealed plastic or other, more affordable laminate of some type that’d work. Best of luck! Cheers
