Hi! Your question is a really good one and something I was definitely asking myself when building as well. For me, we had plenty of top soil from the local tree nursery and filled the entire thing. But if you are using bags from the store or want to get by with less you could certainly put some redwood or cedar boards across to form a higher bottom. You’d most likely want to do a breathable liner to prevent the dirt from filtering out, — but so water could still drain. — You’ll want to do the slats as plywood is going to rot fairly quickly. Depth depends on what you are planning to grow in the garden — I’d recommend checking some forums about growth depth or google searching to find some additional answers to that. But I’d say around 14 inches would be good for most items. Best of luck with the project and enjoy that new garden!
