Hi Galen, Part of the fun of concrete tops is trying out different techniques and seeing what you like! The bug holes shouldn’t be a problem for the sealer. If you notice any pooling when applying the sealer, just let it soak in for a while and if there is still excess you can wipe it out with a cloth. The bug holes may show signs of wear before the rest of the table but that should be the only issue that you could have with them. Cheers!

I have made a concrete table top (my first), mostly following your various plans. There are quite a few small bug holes in the top and sides, but we’ve decided we kind of like them. I hope we can leave them as opposed to filling with a slurry. However, I am concerned this may create issues when I apply the sealer. There are no large gouges and the largest of the bug holes is about 1/8 of an inch. Nevertheless, I wonder if the sealer will pool in the holes or if the holes may otherwise be an issue. Any thoughts/experience regarding leaving the bug holes as is?
Thanks,
Galen

Hey Kristine! Sorry to hear. A wet sander at 800 grit will generally even things out as it takes away the “cream” layer slightly. However, if you don’t have a wet polisher — then I don’t have any other great solutions beyond adding a wet look sealer and seeing if that perhaps helps in evening out the look. Best of luck and let me know what your results are. Cheers

Well Pete the table is looking almost the same (looks a tiny bit lighter but is hard to tell). What would you suggest now? I’d hate to sand more as i feel like it will get more pinholes and I can only dry sand. Let me know. Thanks in advance for all the help!

Hi Kristine, great work! It looks beautiful. Give it some time, that should just be moisture. If it for some reason isn’t ( which I am pretty sure it is ) then I have some other options to even it out 🙂 Cheers!

Your Tutorials are so helpful! I recently made a concrete top table and when demolding I was surprised to find I had almost no pin holes. So I was really happy with the outcome, except that I have some discoloration. I did notice that a portion of the concrete that was against the melamine still seemed damp. See the attached picture(taken a day after removing from the mold). The pattern looks so much like an evaporation pattern that I figured now that the top is exposed it will just need time to “dry”. Do you think this is the case? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bruce, I would say if you are going to go with the acid stain be careful not to get it on the acrylic and tape off with plastic the acrylic to reduce the chance of it getting and acid stain on it. Hope it goes well! Cheers!

I’m making the outdoor concrete top bar and will be including the acrylic inserts with LED lighting. I want to acid stain the top. Will this ruin the acrylic?

I have found Cheng sealer and wax to be the most reliable and produce the best results for my concrete table tops. Here are the affiliate links: Cheng Concrete Sealer http://amzn.to/1WDAr3y and Cheng Concrete wax http://amzn.to/1ZlyLNM
